Augusta
Valentinian was crowned Emperor with Placidia as his regent. It was a tumultuous time in the Western Empire, with the Vandals invading Roman North Africa and the Huns moving westwards. Internal conflict between Aetius, Placidia’s Commander-in-Chief, and Boniface, Count of Africa, culminated in a battle in which Boniface suffered fatal injuries. Aetius went into hiding until Placidia reinstated him as Commander-in-Chief, benefiting from his long-standing relationship with the Huns. Her daughter, Honoria, in a desperate attempt to claim authority for herself, made overtures to Attila and orchestrated an assassination attempt on her brother. It isn’t known whether she was put to death or married off to Bassus, but it is sure that she died before 450 AD, the year of Placidia’s death.
